Can you still qualify for a home equity loan if you behind on mortgage payments? I'm behind on mortgage payments because, i'm going through a loan modification, but i need money to pay for school, will i be able to still get a home equity loan. Because my credit is not amazing.

No. That's the FIRST thing a lender will check before granting a home equity loan. If the primary loan is in default nobody will approve a home equity loan.

If you're behind on your mortgage payments, the last thing you want to do is take out ANOTHER loan. I'm sure they wouldn't qualify you for a home equity loan with your 1st being behind anyway. Have you applied for grants and scholarships for school? If not start there. Or apply for government loans if you get desperate. In reality, the best scenario is probably just to wait until you save up some money and catch up on that mortgage.
