Bad credit means you lack skill handling money and have not paid your bills on time. It's really that simple. If you focus on learning the skills you need, your credit gets fixed as a secondary benefit.
Find and attend a Dave Ramsey "Financial Peace University" course. They're 10 weeks, one night per week. Usually held at churches so the class is reasonably priced. You'll learn what you need to get control of your finances, and ultimately to clean up your credit.

If you want to fix your own credit, there are lots of free resources available on the web if you do a search
