Question
Trying to repair bad credit but where to start? I need a little advice on how/where to start when it comes to repairing bad credit. I cut up my credit cards long ago and only use my debit card for purchases these days. I've never filed for bankruptcy, had a foreclosure on a home or a repossession on a car, just bad financial luck with credit card/lines and a few bills. I don't want to get into a program where someone takes over all my bills or you have to pay them to get something settled, I just want to do this on my own and understand it won't happen over night, that it may take years. And how do I stop the harassing calls at my work/place of employment? Not only is this an embarrassing situation for someone but it's private! We aren't allowed to get personal calls at work and if we do, we are to call them back on our own time and our own phone. The debt collectors seem to think it's o.k. to explain to the receptionists at my work all about my debt problem. I don't think this right and I think there something you can say to them to get them to stop calling but I'm not quite sure of the verbiage, can someone help me with that? One more thing, I had my brother co-sign for a credit line almost 10 years ago to help me pay for some dental work. The credit line just went to collections because I just couldn't keep up with the payments and the horrific interest. What are the steps to take so his credit isn't going to be affected since it's my debt? I just wanted to thank everyone in advance who responds to this. Every piece of advice is very welcomed and appreciated. It's amazing how horrible having bad credit makes you feel as a person and I'm glad I'm not the only one out there struggling. I just want to get on the right track again so I can start feeling better about myself.

Sounds like bankruptcy actually might be a good option and that way you get a clean slate. Its going to be several years no matter what to get your credit back, so why not get the debts under control at the same time? There are positive instances for bankruptcy and you sound like a candidate to be one of them.

You have ruined your brothers credit as well and there is no way you can get your credit back on line until you pay off the dental as it is new collections
