How many kinds of federal student loans are there besides Perkins, Stafford and PLUS Loans? When do you apply for the loans?

Try to avoid loans if possible. You end up paying much more than you were given. Use grants and scholarships instead since those do not need to be paid back.

That covers all the loans besides private ones.. Stafford loans have 2 different categories..subs. and unsub. You apply for the loans by going here www.fafsa.ed.gov.. you would apply for them when you are going to college the next year..

To apply, you should start the federal loan process now by filling out your FAFSA.
